Pheidole megacephala also known as big headed ants are native to tropical countries in south east asia. Big headed ants have been known as a very successful invaders. A mature colonies typically nest underground with multiple queens in a colony. This ant species has three distinctive castes: minor workers, major workers and soldiers. Minor workers are the smallest and usually tend the eggs, major workers (larger) usually carry food items into the nest and soldier ants usually provide escort services when these ants form a line from food source to the nest. Soldier ants have disproportionately big head and this is why Pheidole megacephala is known as big headed ants.
Females: are approximately 7/10 cm to 1 cm long.
