Serration |
|
A series of sawlike teeth. A good example
is shown by the fore femur of Phobaeticus serratipes. |
Setose |
|
Covered with stiff hairs. |
Sexually dichromatic |
|
Refers to species in which males and females
are differently coloured. Example; Oreophoetes
peruana, Baculum sp. 211. |
Sexually dimorphic |
|
Refers to species that have
noticeable physical differences between males
and females. Example; Extatosoma tiaratum, Heteropteryx
dilatata, Areaton asperrimus. |
Spermatophore |
|
The 'parcel' of sperm that is passed from
male to female during copulation. |
Spinose |
|
Spinosus(Latin). Armed with thorny spines,
more elongated. |
sp. |
|
If sp. is written as part of a species' name,
as in Baculum sp. for example, this means that
the genus of the species is known, but no official
name has yet been given to that specific species |
spp. |
|
Sometimes people write such things as Sphodromantis
spp. By this they are referring generally to
all species of that genus, in this instance
the genus 'Sphodromantis'. |
Sternite |

A ventral sclerite or segment. |
Sternum (breastbone) |

A shield-shaped or rod-shaped bone in terrestrial
vertebrates, on the ventral side of the thorax,
that articulates with the clavicle (collar bone)
of the pectoral girdle and with most of the
ribs. It is absent of the exoskeleton of arthropods. |

The last ventral sclerite of the abdomen;
also known as lamina subgenitalis. Note - operculum
is normally used for females; subgenital plate
or sometimes poculum are used for males. |

A major subdivision of an order, containing
a group of related superfamilies or families. |
Subspecies |
|
Singular and plural); abbreviation ssp, for
one. sspp, for two or more. A subdivision of
a species characterised by small differences
in structure, colour or size and separated geographically
from another such subdivision. |
